Paintings

Irene Wood is a Seattle based artist working mostly in acrylic and ink. Her current body of work includes landscapes drawn originally from her interest in the ancient Chinese “shan shui” brush paintings. Her bright interpretations reflect the layered experience of heritage and belonging. She is also exploring the kitchen table as a specific motif of understanding heritage and belonging. Both bodies of work, though vastly different in scale, ask how personal and collective histories imprint themselves onto space, whether they’re vast mountains or a simple wooden surface.

Sumi ink and acrylic on canvas. Irene Wood, 2026

11×14”

I’ve been playing around with the vessels on the table as extensions of my table series. They begin simply as containers but through use, they become holders of memory. We place these vessels in our hands daily and they slowly absorb the rhythms of our daily life. In painting these vessels, the focus shifts from their function to their presence. They become symbolic forms: containers of time, care, and attention. Their surfaces carry the evidence of use and touch and their shapes echo the body itself.
